Emmanuel Ngunga
Emmanuel Ngunga is a Congolese visual artist born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and currently working between Kinshasa and Cape Town, South Africa. He is a graduate of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa, where he developed a strong foundation in painting and a deep commitment to figurative representation.
Ngunga’s practice centers on themes of identity, memory, and cultural heritage. Through a refined approach to realism, he creates emotionally charged portraits that explore the complexities of African identity in transition. His work often incorporates symbolic elements drawn from African traditions such as masks, textiles, and ritual objects reinterpreted within a contemporary visual language.
Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Ngunga seeks to reconnect with cultural narratives that have been overlooked or misrepresented. His paintings frequently portray children as central figures, reflecting both vulnerability and resilience, and suggesting a space of transformation between past and future. For the artist, culture represents the true wealth of a people, and his work acts as a visual dialogue that encourages reflection, awareness, and self-reclamation.
Ngunga has participated in exhibitions in Kinshasa, marking his emergence into the professional art scene. His work continues to evolve through an exploration of personal and collective histories, positioning him as part of a new generation of African artists engaging with tradition while shaping contemporary perspectives.
